Interview Tips Every Fresh Graduate Needs
The interview is your chance to show who you really are beyond your CV. For fresh graduates, it can feel intimidating — but with the right preparation, you can walk in with confidence and walk out with an offer.
Before the Interview
1. Research the company thoroughly — their mission, products, recent news, and competitors.
2. Prepare answers for common questions: 'Tell me about yourself,' 'Why this company?' 'What are your strengths/weaknesses?'
3. Prepare 3 questions to ask THEM — it shows genuine interest.
4. Plan your outfit the night before (business casual is usually safe).
5. Do a test run of the route if it's in-person, or test your camera/mic if it's virtual.
The 'Tell Me About Yourself' Formula
Use this structure: Present → Past → Future.
Present: 'I'm a recent computer science graduate from the University of Lagos with a focus on web development.'
Past: 'During my final year, I built a student marketplace app using React and Node.js that served 500 users.'
Future: 'I'm excited about this role because it aligns with my goal of building fintech products that solve real problems for Nigerians.'
Handling Tough Questions
'What's your greatest weakness?'
Be honest but strategic. Choose a real weakness and explain how you're working on it. Don't say 'I'm a perfectionist' — everyone sees through that.
'Where do you see yourself in 5 years?'
Show ambition that aligns with the role. 'Leading a product team' is better than 'running my own company' (makes them think you'll leave).
'Why should we hire you with no experience?'
Focus on transferable skills: university projects, internships, volunteer work, self-taught skills, and your willingness to learn fast.
Body Language & Communication
• Maintain eye contact (look at the camera on video calls).
• Sit up straight but stay relaxed.
• Don't fidget or play with objects.
• Smile naturally — it makes you likable.
• Speak clearly and at a moderate pace.
• It's okay to pause and think before answering — it shows thoughtfulness, not incompetence.
After the Interview
Send a thank-you email within 24 hours. Reference something specific from the conversation ('I enjoyed learning about the team's approach to X'). Reaffirm your interest. If you don't hear back within the stated timeframe, a polite follow-up email is perfectly acceptable.
